What is Phase 5
The main focus within Phase 5 is to ensure pupils are prepared for their next steps for adulthood, whether that be to an education provider, training provider or employment. We aim to ensure that students are fully equipped to leave with a range of qualifications and work experience suitable to their level of learning and career pathway. Students develop a range of communication, employability and problem solving skills to increase their independence and prepare them for the world of work.
Phase 5 groups access core, vocational learning and work experience as part of their timetable where they work towards a combination of qualifications and employability skills. Qualifications are typically at Entry Level or Level 1. In Phase 5 we do not have a ‘typical’ timetable, but all students study the following core subjects;
- Maths
- English
- SETPD (Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development)
Vocational pathways
The remainder of the timetable is made up of options chosen to help the student achieve the pathway they are working towards, whether that is employment, increased independence and life skills or a combination of all 3. The options students can choose from include:
- Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award
- Catering
- Horticulture
- Art
- Design Technology
- Music
- Lifeskills
- External work placements (where appropriate)
This is not an exhaustive list, just a range of some of the options available.
Teaching within Phase 5 has a practical approach, but is targeted towards giving students experience of the world of work, linked to real life situations. We recognise that some students are not ready to engage in this level of learning and need more support to enhance their skills in readiness for adulthood, therefore a life skills pathway is also available.
Key Features
Lifeskills at Phase 5
Some students in Phase 5 require a more bespoke pathway which is more reflective of their social and emotional needs, whilst still building on academic progress prior to joining sixth form. This pathways will still include Maths, English and SETPD but taught in a more practical way. Work experience will likely be school based or encounters in the community within a small group of other students, building independence and life skills for adulthood.
Work placements
Some students are further on in their journey and more prepared for the world of work. We
offer a range of work experience placements to these students where appropriate. Examples of such placements would be access to training centres to learn mechanics, construction or hairdressing, supporting community placements or working within local
businesses.
