What is Phase 4
The main focus within Phase 4 is to ensure pupils are prepared for their next steps, whether that be to Epinay 6th form, an external provider such as college or training centre, or to an employer. We aim to ensure that students are fully equipped to leave with a range of qualifications suitable to their level of learning, know how to be safe in society, and have the skills and knowledge to be able to be responsible citizens.
Phase 4 groups access core, foundation and vocational learning as part of their timetable where they work towards qualifications typically at Entry Level or Level 1. For the majority of students, the timetable is structured in the following way:
- English – 4 lessons per week
- Maths – 3 lessons per week
- Science – 3 lessons per week
- RE, PHSE and PE – 1 lesson each per week
Key Features
Vocational options
Students then choose 2 option pathways per year, which they do for 2 afternoons each per week. Examples of these being horticulture, sport, photography, DT, performing arts, lifeskills and ICT (see subjects page for full list of qualifications and schemes of work). This
gives students the opportunity to achieve in 4 different vocational subjects throughout phase 4, gaining an understanding of skills required to work in different industries, building knowledge of the subjects, whilst also accessing qualifications in the different areas. Guest speakers and outside visits, particularly linked to next steps, give students a greater insight to their options after leaving.
Teaching within Phase 4 has a practical approach, but is targeted towards giving students experience of the world of work, linked to real life situations. We recognise that some students are not ready to engage in this level of learning and need more support to enhance their skills in readiness for adulthood, therefore a life skills pathway is also available.
Lifeskills at Phase 4
Phase 4 Life Skills provides a nurturing environment for young people who may require
further adaptations to the curriculum and/or a greater consistency of staffing and
environment. Students continue to receive both Maths and English (at accredited level
where appropriate) alongside their chosen qualification options but also work towards a
qualification in skills for life. This curriculum aims to promote confidence and independence; developing a knowledge and skill base that equips and prepares young people for
adulthood.
Work placements
Some students are further on in their journey and more prepared for the world of work. We
offer a range of work experience placements to these students where appropriate. Examples of such placements would be access to training centres to learn mechanics, construction or hairdressing, supporting community placements or working within local
businesses.
Bespoke timetables
At Epinay we are aware that all students have different needs and some need a more
individualised approach to enable them to be successful. A small number of students follow a bespoke pathway, where their timetable is tailored to ensure they are able to access education in a way which allows them to fully engage in school life. Examples of this may be work placements within the school environment, such as working in the school kitchen or onsite cafe or taking part in enterprise projects, as well as working on their core qualifications which may be delivered in smaller groups or on a 1-1 basis.
